Get help, without the hard sell

Last reviewed 3 October 2026 · How Tax Letters checks its facts

Two honest facts first. You can deal with HMRC directly, free, without any adviser, and for plenty of letters that is the sensible route. And if money is tight, the tax charities exist for exactly this: TaxAid for people on low incomes, older people included (Tax Help for Older People is now part of TaxAid), and Citizens Advice for everyone. Anyone who buries those options wants your fear more than your interests.

HMRC itself runs an extra support service for people who find dealing with tax hard because of health, disability, a bereavement or circumstances, and Citizens Advice helps with letters of every kind, free.

If you want a professional

Tax Letters does not offer a paid service yet, and this page will say so plainly when that changes. If you want someone to take the letter on, a chartered accountant or chartered tax adviser can act for you; GOV.UK explains how to appoint a tax agent and what they can do on your behalf. Nothing on this site is a recommendation of any firm.
