Check your Simple Assessment against your own records
Last reviewed 1 September 2026 · How Tax Letters checks its facts
HMRC's letter says how much tax it thinks you owe and the figures it used.
What's worth having beside you
- The Simple Assessment letter (PA302) itself
- Your P60 or P45, for employment income and tax already paid
- Your state pension letter from DWP, or private pension statements (P60 from the pension provider)
- Bank or building society interest statements or certificates of interest
No letter in hand? You can read what a Simple Assessment is and how the letters work first.
Missing a figure? Skip it: the checker tells you how to get it.
Your figures are compared on this device. Nothing is sent to Tax Letters.
Helping a parent or someone else with their letter?
This cycle's letters go to many pensioners, and checking a parent's letter with them is exactly what this tool is for. Sit together, use their documents, and the comparison works the same way. Nothing here needs their identity, an account, or anything beyond the figures in front of you.
